One of my favourite authors is Rolf Dobelli and his book The Art of Thinking Clearly. Dobelli wrote the following:
"The availability bias says this: we create a picture of the world using the examples that most easily come to mind. this is absurd, of course, because in reality things don't happen more frequently just because we can conceive of them more easily"...
Currently wherever you look in the media there are articles, TV reporters and just your random dude on the street talking about the "deadly" Coronavirus. Firstly, there are many, many more deadly viruses then the novel Coronavirus. At the time of writing this the official number according to the situation report of the WHO there are now >2million with the virus and there has been approximately 140,000 deaths. This puts the rate of "deadliness" at .07%. A simple google search will reveal that the common influenza virus in 2019 killed approximately 400,000 people at a rate of about 1%. You then have Ebola at a rate of 70% fatal and Bird Flu at 60%. The point of these stats is there are lots of "deadly" viruses in this world but the only one anyone is talking about is the Coronavirus. Is Coronavirus something to be cavalier about? Of course not and I would recommend everyone follows their governments guidelines or in fact as some governments have been cavalier I recommend you protect yourself by staying indoors. The point I am making is you would believe currently based on what is around you in the news and social media and basically wherever you look that there is only 1 virus in this world. This is the power of availability bias. Just cause it is all around you in the news, your social feed or the local pub gossip doesn't mean that in fact it is, it is what your brain makes you think it is.
This is the same for your lifting. I usually train at home, In my view the best way to train however I acknowledge not everyone gets that opportunity. more recently on a family vacation in the UK for 3 weeks I attended a regular commercial gym and was shocked at the number of women who seemingly did nothing else but "booty" workouts. Bands wrapped around legs in some semi bondage like capacity on stairmills. Incessant hip thrusting and countless reps of squats with your arse pushed way out. A quick check of most womens Instagram feed or facebook will show a procession of glamour models in yoga pants doing these workouts and espousing the virtues of a big "booty". Again, madness. Just because it is "available" or common doesn't make it right. Balance people, please!
Larry Wheels hitting PR's every week on bench, squat or dead doesn't make it right for you to train that way. Do not get caught up with an availability bias about your lifting. Yes a quick look on YouTube show's heaps of jacked dudes lifting monsterous poundages making you think everyone is but the truth is these are the "one percenter's" or if you're a fan of the late Rich Piana "a five %er".
Focus on what you need. Do not follow the crowd. Just cause it seems ubiquitous doesn't make it the right thing to do. Stop being a lemming. Remember a lion doesn't lose sleep over the thoughts of a sheep. BE THE LION.
